2kg of heroin destroyed following a court order

The Bayanzurkh District Court recently concluded the latest case of drug smuggling in Mongolia. Following an order by the court, seized drug evidence was set on fire yesterday. According to estimates, one out of four people in Mongolia have been involved in drug use or drug trafficking.

It is believed that this case involved the largest drug smuggling ring to be brought to trial. According to the court, the suspects had been caught smuggling drugs into Mongolia many times, and have now been sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison.

In the process of disposing of the drug evidence, a working group of six members monitored the disposal which took place outside of the city. The drug was believed to be heroin. Heroin is considered one of the most addictive and expensive drugs on the international market. One kilogram of heroin can cost up to 400 thousand US dollars.

According to unofficial estimates, Mongolia is home to over 16 thousand drug users.
