President Elbegdorj: Mongolia Will Never Bury Nuclear Waste

President of Mongolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj received Masakazu Ota from the Kyodo Tsushin, Japanese news agency, who took an interview from President. The interview was dedicated to the Nuclear Abolition Day on September 26, 2014.

President Elbegdorj noted: “It seems that there is no history or practice that someone benefits having a nuclear weapon. The five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council declared the nuclear-weapon-free status of Mongolia. In order to support this status, we are discussing the possibilities to make an intergovernmental agreement with the five members of the UN Security Council and in particular with our two neighbors Russia and China.

Mongolian Security Council has made a certain decision on banning the transportation and storage of nuclear waste in the territory of Mongolia. No one has the right to hold any talks or negotiation on storing nuclear waste in Mongolia without the Security Council’s permission.

The Law on nuclear energy was adopted in Mongolia in 2009 and Mongolia maintains strong position on storing and transporting nuclear waste. Mongolia will never bury and transport nuclear waste in its territory and it is approved decision.
