Recent stories of dead and deformed livestock linked to uranium mining in Dornogobi Province was among the top stories in Mongolia. The Premier issued an order and formed a working group to study the reported cases in the area. The working group reported that radioactive substances were not the cause of livestock dying.
In April this year, two stories were reported from the Dornogobi ( or East Gobi) Province. AREVA, a multinational uranium mining company headquartered in France, announced that its Mongolian subsidiary, Kojegobi LLC, had located an estimated 55,000 tons of uranium deposit in the Ulaanbadrakh District. At the same time, local media reported the strange deaths and deformities of livestock in the district.
Herders living a few miles from the exploration site reported that their lambs, goats, and camels were giving birth to deformed babies. In some cases the newborns were blind or hairless, but other deformities were more extreme.
The working group assigned to the area said that radioactive substances did not affect the livestock, their second statement in connection with this issue.
