In October, 4 magnitude earthquake struck near the capital, and just yesterday same magnitude quake was recorded in Bayan-Ulgii Province. These quakes were felt by people, but there are quakes continuously recorded in the country that are not felt, say related officials. Specialists warn that these undetected continuous quakes can be the sign of a strong quake to come.
The Astronomy and Geophysics Research Center says a quake can hit Ulaanbaatar anytime. They noted that it is impossible to predict earthquakes. The current equipment in Mongolia can only report vibrations from quakes after they strike. Also, the quakes cannot currently be directly reported to the Emergency Department, due to procedural delays.
Ts.Batsaikhan, Senior Official of the Earthquake Research Sector at the Astronomy and Geophysics Research Center, “Quakes recorded near Ulaanbaatar have significantly increased. Since 2005, there have been around 4,000 earthquakes registered”.
The area near Emeelt is considered the most active quake area in the capital. If a quake hits this area, vibrations will be felt in the capital in just a few seconds, meaning that the earthquake measurement equipment won’t have time to predict the vibrations. The most dangerous thing here, is that there is an area near the capital that has been activated for six to seven years. This means an earthquake can happen in UB at any time, and Mongolians are not well prepared for this type of disaster, say related officials.
