Drug use in Mongolia has increased 10 fold over the last decade. Officials criticize the state for not protecting its people from this danger. Critics say that despite initiatives by the Mongolian President, discussions of the matter and the tightening of related laws have been ineffective.
In Russia, if a person is caught smuggling drugs, they are subject to the strictly enforced death penalty. Russia is looking for ways to further tighten its drug related crime measurements. Over 30 thousand people die  in Russia each year in connection with drug use. In Mongolia, a growing number of people are becoming drug users, but it is unknown how many deaths are linked to drug abuse. The nation's drug related measurements and laws are weak, which has resulted in Mongolia becoming a drug transport country.
Young Mongolians are becoming trapped in drug dependency and families are being destroyed by the toll that drugs take on individuals and their loved ones.
The country's only drug related law was ratified in 2002. But at that time, Mongolia had a poor understanding of drugs.
