An opening ceremony was held for a road connecting Dundgobi Province, located in the south of the country, with the capital city. The province, which is over 260 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar is the 3rd province to have a road connected to UB this year.
The project to connect Dundgobi Province to the city started in 2009. In the first stage, a 116 kilometer road was built and the last 104 kilometers recently completed makes it a non-stop paved drive to Ulaanbaatar. The work was financed by the Chinggis Bond, at a cost of 49.2 billion tugrik. By building a road to connect the far-away province to the city brings Dundgobi closer to greater development.
Residents of Dundgobi Province, “Before having this road, cars passing by our province had many difficulties. But now that we have this road ready, elders like me are truly satisfied”.
“People of our province greatly welcome the new road. Now people will drive on the roads of our province without their cars breaking down and not worrying about any accidents”.
“Our route to the capital city was pretty poor, with many bumps on our way. Now that we have our road ready, we are enjoying it very much”.
The last 104 kilometers completed in the last stage of construction was built by three Mongolian companies working together with four Chinese companies.
Roads connecting the capital to Khuvsgul, Dornod, and Dornogobi provinces are also expected to be complete this year, while roads to Gobi-Altai, Zavkhan, and Sukhbaatar are expected in 2014, and roads to Khovd, Uvs, and Bayan-Ulgii will be built in 2015. The government hopes to eventually connect all 21 provinces to the city by paved road.
