The Foreign Ministry of Mongolia announced that rumors have spread suggesting that Mongolia isn’t adhering to policies regarding nuclear weapons. The ministry says these rumors are false. The Mongolian President declared that Mongolia is a non-nuclear region at the recent UN General Assembly, and that the government operates under the policies outlined by the declaration.
Mongolia has its own policies on radioactive minerals and nuclear energy, which were ratified in 2009 by the Parliament. An advisor to the Foreign Minister of Mongolia says he denies the rumors of ignoring the related policy. The rumor suggests that when French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius visited Mongolia last month, the sides inked a document on uranium. But the Mongolian Foreign Ministry has officially announced that the signing of this document never took place.
A.Batpurev Advisor to the Foreign Minister of Mongolia, “During the visit, both sides signed a document on freeing visa requirements between diplomatic passport holders of the two countries. There were no discussions held over the issue of uranium exploitation or burying uranium powder waste in Mongolia”.
During Fabius' visit, an agreement was signed between Mongolian state-owned Mon-Atom LLC and Areva Corporation, which adhered to Mongolian nuclear energy policy on radioactive minerals.
