Car accidents and crime among children rise driving parents to patrol school zones

2013-11-22 15:08:16

As of this year, there are over 900 documented cases of children involved in accidents on roads. Officials say that cases of children affected by crime near schools have also increased. In response, UB administrators have initiated a project to decrease the number of these incidents by working with schools and parents.

The 13th secondary school is located near high-traffic roads. Students say that going to school is difficult  and dangerous, as vehicles pass their school at high speeds.

Students, “Cars usually go at very high speeds. I have to wait or take many steps to get far away from the vehicles. It seems like these cars will hit me”, “Some cars stop for us while others do not. So, I usually feel like I am going to be hit by the cars that don’t stop at signs”.

In the past, many students were killed in accidents on the roads near the school. The addition of speed bumps and more signs along the roads are not enough, say school administrators. The incidence of children being hit by a cars and serious injuries is still taking place.

B.Narantuya, Social Worker at UB's 13th Secondary School “A few measurements were taken to reduce these kinds of incidents, but drivers go through and almost hit passing children, even when a teacher is holding a stop sign. So drivers, please be more responsible. Children run quickly everywhere they go, so I think drivers should take this problem seriously”.

Related officials say that this issue is not only a problem for this secondary school but every school located in the capital, and greater attention to the danger is needed. Estimates show that 46 percent of the accidents involve children under age seven, while 40 percent involve eight to 14 year olds, and 16.6 percent of children affected are between the ages of 15 and 17.

The “School Patrol” project initiated by the Governor’s Office will be implemented in 240 schools in the capital over two years. The project includes the participation of school employees and parents.

N.Sumiya, Head of the Crime Prevention Division at the Capital Police Department, “As part of the project, parents will patrol at their children’s school once a year for a half day. When they are patrolling, they will work with a certain amount of funding set by the related state department”.

In other words, parents will be patrolling schools during the daytime, working together with the police department. Parents will be working in two shifts managed by school administration.
